In the heart of North Macedonia, between the cities of Veles and Ovče Polje, reconstruction of a key 110 kV transmission line, originally built more than half a century ago, has been completed. This 21-kilometer-long line has now been modernized to ensure more stable and reliable electricity supply for the regions of Sveti Nikole and Veles.
Project overview
Elnos Group teams played a key role in this major undertaking, which required the dismantling of old concrete towers and the construction of new steel lattice towers along a significant portion of the route. The works were carried out with maximum precision and dedication to ensure the quality and long-term durability of the infrastructure.
Technical characteristics
- Transmission line voltage: 110 kV
- Length of reconstructed line: 21 km
- Replacement of old concrete towers with new steel lattice towers
- Modernization of power-system components
- System adaptation to enable integration of renewable energy sources
Implementation challenges
- Work on existing infrastructure more than 50 years old, requiring careful planning and execution
- Coordination of works across different sections of the route while maintaining grid stability
- Optimization of the transmission line route to improve electricity transmission efficiency
- Compliance with environmental standards, considering that the line passes through agricultural land and that land impact had to be minimized
Elnos Group’s role
Elnos Group played a key role in project implementation through the following activities:
- Dismantling of old concrete towers and construction of new steel towers
- Modernization of protection and control systems
- Optimization of power transmission through improved technical solutions
- Testing and commissioning of the reconstructed transmission line
Strategic importance
- Increased security of electricity supply in the regions of Sveti Nikole and Veles
- Integration of new renewable energy sources into North Macedonia’s power system
- Reduction of electricity transmission losses, improving overall network efficiency
- Long-term stability of power infrastructure, enabling reliable supply for households and industry
The reconstruction of the 110 kV Veles–Ovče Polje transmission line represents a key step in strengthening North Macedonia’s energy infrastructure, improving network capacity and enabling easier integration of renewable energy sources.
